What makes an Authentic Southern Style Iced Tea?
Originally the black teas that the Old South fell in love with a century ago were robust teas from Ceylon (present-day Sir Lanka) and India, which took sugar well without having their flavor ‘drowned’ in it. Hand picked, these were the teas used in the iced tea drinks for the first half of the 20th century. Most of the tea in India and Sir Lanka today fetch a high price on the international market because of their sophisticated flavor. . Much cheaper, teas from South America, which are mechanically harvested instead of hand picked, constitute the vast majority of iced tea blends today.
Smoky Mountain Tea Company uses only hand picked teas, two leaves and a bud, from the mountain slopes of Sir Lanka. We invite both the Southerner and the Yankee to discover the flavor that made sweet tea as southern as grits and sweet potato pie.
